New Age Voltage Tester

Background

Voltage Testers or properly know as Pen Voltage Detectors, are used to determine whether an outlet or wire is ‘live’ for the safety of its user.

Problem

Current products on the market, such as the one below do not allow for hands free testing. In other words, the user must be holding the device at all times in order to test the activity of the wire or outlet; this can be dangerous when testing high voltage sources.

Solution 

Designed all components of a device that would allow the user to safely turn off the power supply, connect and secure the device to the source (wire or outlet), and then allow the user to turn on the power supply to test its functionality.

  • How the device functions: Similar to the current products on the market this device would be powered by 2 AAA batteries that are connected to a compact PC board that is button operated to detect voltage. As part of the concept, a Bluetooth device would be attached to the bottom of the PC board, so the user would be able to test the wire or outlet away from the source.

Features of the New Age Tester 
Clip

  • Clip: Designed clip to allow the device to clamp onto wires. This mechanism encourages the user to step away from the voltage source and use its Bluetooth capability to test the wire's activity. The teeth on the clip enhance the grip on the wire, so the device do not slip during testing.

  • Extended Nose Cap: Designed feature to allow the user to insert the device into an outlet and similar to the clip encourages the user to use the Bluetooth capability to test the outlet away from the source.

  • Ribbed Body: Design multiple rib features to enhance the users grip and control when maneuvering the device.

  • End Cap: Design end cap to snap onto the body of the device that ultimately keeps the batteries within the device. Also has a ‘humanized pen’ feature so the user can clip to their clothing when they are not using the device.

  • Designed for Injection Molding: A majority of the components on this device (i.e. Nose Cap, Body, Clip, and End Cap) were designed to have a 1-degree draft angle applied to their features.

  • Compact Design: Similar to the products on the market, this device was design to be very compact in size (can easily fit in your palm).

  • Internal Ribs: Designed ribs to capture the PC board and the batteries, so they remain stationary when using the device. This also allows the batteries and PC board to be easily removed and replaced if necessary. A 2-degree draft angle was applied to the ribs for injection molding.
